It took less than 30 seconds for the horror show to start and the game already had 3 goals in it by half time as Veracruz destroyed a group of boys in complete disarray.
Maybe an alien vacuumed all the football knowledge from the brains of the Yucatan players just before the referee blew the whistle to start the game.
That would be a justifiable excuse if it was true but a more likely reason is that they just didn’t comprehend the quality gap between Puebla and the rest of the group.
Now they know, but it’s too late.
They showed a bit more organisation in the second half but still conceded 2 more goals with no clear chances created by them.
No one can have any complaints about the final score of 5-0 except perhaps the coach of Veracruz if he was feeling truly ruthless.
It would take a major miracle in the desert of Baja California Sur for Puebla to take points from Veracruz and many will say another one for Yucatan to beat Quintana Roo. But if this hastily scrambled together team can pull themselves together and show some fight for what will surely be their last dance in this tournament at least they will be able to go home with heads held high.
It’s not often a team doesn’t make the knock out stage with 6 points and it’s hopeful to think it can happen tomorrow but at least they need to try.
