Yucatan bow out with dull draw

At least they showed some fight but in the end they did not show the ability needed to beat a team already through to the last 16.

It was Quintana Roo that had the chances, hitting the crossbar once and forcing two good saves. Yucatan didn’t have any clear chances.

Yucatan now start the long journey home to Merida with 4 points after Quintana Roo bagged the extra in the penalty shootout.

Yucatan humbled by Veracruz

It took less than 30 seconds for the horror show to start and the game already had 3 goals in it by half time as Veracruz destroyed a group of boys in complete disarray.

Maybe an alien vacuumed all the football knowledge from the brains of the Yucatan players just before the referee blew the whistle to start the game.

That would be a justifiable excuse if it was true but a more likely reason is that they just didn’t comprehend the quality gap between Puebla and the rest of the group.

Now they know, but it’s too late.

They showed a bit more organisation in the second half but still conceded 2 more goals with no clear chances created by them.

No one can have any complaints about the final score of 5-0 except perhaps the coach of Veracruz if he was feeling truly ruthless.

It would take a major miracle in the desert of Baja California Sur for Puebla to take points from Veracruz and many will say another one for Yucatan to beat Quintana Roo.  But if this hastily scrambled together team can pull themselves together and show some fight for what will surely be their last dance in this tournament at least they will be able to go home with heads held high.

It’s not often a team doesn’t make the knock out stage with 6 points and it’s hopeful to think it can happen tomorrow but at least they need to try.

Yucatan grab top spot at end of round 1

Yucatan edged to the top of the group with a comfortable win over a young Puebla team after Quintana Roo had earlier pipped Veracruz thanks to a last minute winner.

Quintana Roo took the lead early before Veracruz equalised  before the end of the first half. In a tight but exciting end to end game it took a last minute winner to break the deadlock.

Puebla, a young side with several 2002 & two 2003 players in the squad, made a feisty start but ultimately two decisive  moves in the first half gave Yucatan a comfortable lead and it was never in doubt who was going to win.

However, this was not an emphatic performance by Yucatan and they will need to up their game a few gears to compete against Veracruz on Tuesday.

It’s difficult to imagine Veracruz or Quintana Roo dropping points against Puebla and so the easiest path to the last 16 would be to defeat Veracruz on Tuesday.

Yucatan join neighbors Quintana Roo in group D

At the inauguration event attended by the governor of Baja California Sur Yucatan was drawn into group D.

They are joined by Quintana Roo & Puebla.

The teams will play each other in a round robin with 1st & 2nd progressing to the last 16.
